Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon review (XBLA)

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon was developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. It was released May 1, 2013 for 1200 MSP. A copy was provided for review purposes.

FC1

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon is an interesting game. Far Cry 3 was a huge success for Ubisoft so it only seemed natural for some sort of DLC to come our way. Instead what we have is a standalone game that is radically different in design and tone, a game that can stand on its own two feet even if a player had no prior knowledge of anything Far Cry. That is the true beauty of this game. Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon shares no story or setting from the original game. Veteran players will be able to jump in and play through this crazy world with familiar controls and elements from previous Far Cry games, while newcomers can pick it up and not be worried about having no prior knowledge of events from other games.

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon takes place in an alternate future where the land has been ravaged by war. With that in mind, you may think this game is a serious, post apocalyptic adventure. That is far from the truth. Blood Dragon is a parody of all those great action movies from the 70’s and 80’s. You play as a cybernetic commando who engages in outrageous combat, makes crude jokes as he takes down his enemies and fires gigantic guns with reckless abandon. Cutscenes are done with an extremely retro 8-bit vibe, voice actors sound so macho and tough that it is hard to take anything seriously and the music sounds like something from 30 years ago that went out of style long before this game was conceived. All these things come together however to form one of the craziest, most enjoyable experiences we have seen on the XBLA platform.

Flashback remake coming to XBLA

Flashback remake coming to XBLA

It’s been 20 years since the Amiga/Sega Genesis/Mega Drive (and other platforms) hit Flashback, a cinematic platformer in which protagonist Conrad Hart must protect humanity from a shape shifting group of aliens. Woken and suffering from amnesia, he finds a recording from himself detailing the plot against humanity.

The story takes place in a futuristic setting and gameplay can be compared to Shadow Complex. Like that game, Flashback is powered by Unreal Engine 3. The original game was a best-selling, critically acclaimed game, and the remake looks to follow in its footsteps. Much of the original core team returns for the 2.5D remake, which as of yet has no release date or pricing. The original game’s sequel, Fade to Black, was equally compelling. Here’s hoping it gets the remake treatment as well. Hit the jump for concept art and the full press release .

Far Cry: Blood Dragon coming May 1

far_cry_3_blood_dragon

More details on the illusive Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon have been revealed. The release date of May 1 was originally outed by an Xbox.com listing, since removed. Several media outlets have since confirmed this date. IGN also posted the first 15 minutes of the game via their website. Not wanting to poach a great video, you can view it in its entirety at IGN.

The game itself is an homage to every cheesy 80’s action film and video game. Cutscenes are two dimensional and hand-drawn, the cyborg protagonist, Sargent Rex “Power” Colt, is the embodiment of all the bad video game box art from the decade, and there are more monotone robotic voices than you can count. No price has been confirmed, but we’re guessing this will be in the 1200 MSP range, and we can confirm that it does not require the retail version of Far Cry 3 to play. This is totally stand-alone, totally XBLA, and totally awesome. Hit the jump for additional screenshots.

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon teaser trailer and website embrace an ’80s future

By  •  News

Farcry 3: Blood Dragon has been on XBLA Fans’ radar since Marketplace art leaked online last month, and now Ubisoft has made one of its worst-kept secrets a reality. A teaser trailer for Blood Dragon appeared alongside a Geocities-esque website today, which portrays the game as an ’80s sci-fi action movie. The teaser doesn’t reveal much outside of reinforcing the 80s-inspired aesthetic, though we captured a brief flash of what appears to be in-game footage. If anything can be gleaned from it, it looks as though Blood Dragon will keep with Far Cry’s FPS lineage.
