Huge “Countdown to 2013” marketplace sale begins December 18

In a blog post he’s since deleted, Xbox Live Director of Programming, Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb, announced the “Countdown to 2013” sale for the marketplace. The sale, which begins on December 18 and runs through December 31, will see discounts for a raft of content from certain franchises and publishers on both XBLA and the wider marketplace.

Although the official page has been pulled, the folks over at NeoGAF managed to compile a reasonably comprehensive list of the titles to go on sale and the date their discounts will take effect. Unfortunately, Major Nelson never revealed the discounted prices at any stage. But if you hope to catch any of the games or DLC in the list below for cheap, it may pay to stock up on MSP!

However, the fact that the official page has been pulled (even though most of the details are out in the wild) has us at least a little concerned, so maybe try not to pin all your hopes and dreams on the “Countdown to 2013” sale.

The full list of currently known discounted XBLA items follows:

Friday Top Five: Best Bang for your buck!

Look after the pennies, and the pounds (or dollars, euros, pesos or whatever) will take care of themselves. Or at least, that’s what our parents used to tell us, right?

That may be sensible where traditional currency is concerned, but it’s not a strategy that converts well into MSP. Waiting for sales and bargains may be the cheapest way of buying XBLA games – but what if the game you want never goes on sale? What if everyone else has moved on and you lose out on the best bit of a fantastic co-op game like Lara Croft: GOL or a community-focused game like Section 8: Prejudice? What if you think you’re buying something you want, but actually you just bought it because it was cheap and you end up wasting MSP anyway?

Trials Evolution: Origin of Pain review (XBLA DLC)

The Origin of Pain downloadable content for Trials Evolution was developed by RedLynx and co-published by Microsoft Studios and Ubisoft. It was released on October 5, 2012 for 400 MSP. A copy was provided for review purposes.

Fall is upon us. The Summer of Arcade promotion is over, and while the five games released all did fairly well the real heroes this year are two Spring games: Minecraft and Trials Evolution. Both have been a beacon of hope in what has been a relatively disappointing year for Xbox Live Arcade thus far. Trials Evo is one of only a few of this year’s games we’re still playing are likely to still be this time next year.

That interest is compounded with the newly released Origin of Pain downloadable content. RedLynx delivered in a big way with their Trials HD DLC, and are upping the ante this time around. It’s arguably the most ambitious DLC offered for any XBLA game, and certainly one of the best bargains on the marketplace. While it does have a few weak points, Origin of Pain brings thrills in a way that only the RedLynx gang knows how to deliver.

Trials Evolution: Origin of Pain preview

Trials Evolution: Origin of Pain preview

Trials Evolution: Origin of Pain looks awesome. Like trade-in-your-AAA-title-for-MSP awesome. But for all that awesome the details of what it contains haven’t been highly publicized. Sure, everyone’s covered the obligatory “Here’s an announcement” post, but most of those didn’t go into much detail as to what the DLC will actually contain. We did some digging, and here’s what we know so far. There’s also a screenshot gallery and a summary at the bottom of the preview, so be sure to hit the jump for all the dirt.

Origins of Pain takes place on an all-new island–one that is 4km x 4km in size. It’s massive. By comparison the island that was shipped with the game is only 2km x 4km. We’re getting double the sandbox. Twice the playground. Two times the… well, you get the point. 36 new Trials tracks challenge players on this massive battlefield, and RedLynx once again shows us just what the in-game editor can do with a little imagination. Settings span from a circus to an aircraft graveyard. And it won’t be just Trials tracks. 10 new Supercross courses and an unknown number of Skill Games will be included. One image given to select press showed the rider grappling along a la Bionic Commando. Hold your girlish squeals in. There’s more.
