Reverb Publishing and Epic ink Unreal Engine 3 licensing deal

By  •  News

Reverb Publishing has agreed to a licensing deal with Epic Games that will allow the publisher’s development partners to make use of Epic’s omnipresent Unreal Engine 3 (UE3). Unrestrained access to the engine’s source code will now be at the disposal of all devs who release their titles under the Reverb banner.

“This UE3 site license gives Reverb another tool we can add to our menu of services for independent developers,” Reverb’s Vice President of Business Development, Katie Morgan, said of the arrangement.

The deal is the first of its kind between Epic and a publishing house that focuses solely on downloadable titles. Cary, North Carolina-based Epic’s UE3 has previously been used to power games as diverse as Mass Effect 3, Gears of War 3 (Unreal 3.5) and the Reverb-published Dungeon Defenders.

XBLA’s Most Wanted: Unreal Tournament 2004

Ahhh Unreal Tournament. The Quake killer. The time sinker. The first worthwhile shooter that didn’t have some over-the-top story. It was just you, a gun, and an agenda. There were no worlds to save, no personal vendetta, just the tournament–the Unreal Tournament. And 1999’s success story was followed up multiple sequels and even a console spinoff, the Unreal Championship series. To most the culmination of UT hit with Unreal Tournament 2004. Sure, 2007’s Unreal Tournament 3 was great, but it went up against the likes of Halo and Call of Duty. It’s not surprising it didn’t float.

That’s why today we set our hopes on a digital UT2004. Xbox Live Arcade is a unique beast; a game can be successful on gameplay alone. It’s a place where flashy graphics are nice, but not necessary. And more importantly, it’s digital. That means people won’t be trading the game in as soon as they get bored. They’ll put it aside for a bit and come back to it once a week or so. And that, my friends, means a persistent community.

Rewind Review: Shadow Complex (XBLA)

Shadow Complex was developed by Chair Entertainment and Epic Games and published by Microsoft Game Studios. It retails for 1200 MSP and was released August 19, 2009.

Modern games seem to always wear a little bit of inspiration from the classic days. Sonic had inspiration from Mario in the platforming realm while Gears of War got some from Resident Evil 4 in the shooter realm. Chair Entertainment’s Shadow Complex borrows a lot from classic Metroid and Castlevania games and seems to outdo both in its own little way.

You play as Jason Fleming when your girlfriend gets kidnapped during a hike in the mountains. The culprits are a mysterious terrorist organization and it’s up to you to use their own technology as a means of destroying the enemy. For being inspired by a classic style of gameplay, Shadow Complex does more in that style than most developers. But does that mean it’s always for the best?
