State of Decay’s character skills explained

By  •  News

State of Decay

In a blog post, Undead Labs has detailed the way in which character and skill systems operate in its upcoming open-world survival horror title, State of Decay.

According to the studio, the characters that you encounter and choose to welcome into your group will affect the dynamic of your entire experience. Their differing skill sets and personalities will present unique challenges in the way they interact with each other.

“A good story isn’t about characters as unchanging archetypes,” begins the blog post. “It does explore innate potential and expectations, but it’s also about choices and change (or refusal to change). A good survival story in particular puts its characters to the test, but not just as individuals.”

In State of Decay, all survivors share the same basic skill sets – Cardio, Wits, Fighting and Shooting – but they are weighted differently depending on the character. Each survivor has a number of stars next to each category that represents their proficiency in that particular skill. Additional stars are earned by successfully making use of these skills in-game.

Sparse new screens from State of Decay

UndeadLabs_StateofDecay_HillHouseUndead Labs’ forthcoming zombie-apocalypse survival simulator continues to shamble toward an “early 2013” release. To help lighten the unbearable wait, Labs has maintained as much transparency as possible, fostering a dialogue with the community that’s more give than take. The latest in that line of communication was supposed to be a teaser trailer Undead had hoped to debut, but alas, it’s not ready. That’s the bad news.

The good news is the reason for the delay: a studio-wide crunch to submit the “first complete version” of the game to Microsoft to begin the initial round of certification testing. A milestone the studio reports being “very close” to achieving.

Fortunately for those of us who look forward to these sorts of things, Labs’ community manager and information conduit, Undead Sanya, has secured several screenshots from the upcoming teaser. We expect the trailer to hit any day now, but in the meantime, we certainly appreciate the sneak peek. Hit the jump to check out the sparse digs you might find yourself holed up in when State of Decay releases later this year.

No stranger to downloadable shooters, Zombie Studios’ upcoming Special Forces: Team X capitalizes on its expertise honed crafting Blacklight: Tango Down and Black: Retribution. Don’t be fooled by the colorful cel-shaded visuals; Special Forces targets frenetic third-person team-centric combat with brutal executions and an arsenal of real world weapons. Its dynamic map tile system puts players in control of generating the environment in a pre-round vote, with over a hundred possible combinations of individual tiles to choose. All this coupled with a healthy rank progression and customization system means Special Forces: Team X stands to deliver quite the bang for your buck when it hits XBLA on February 6 for 1200 MSP.
