State of Decay developers offer character skills Q&A
The popular question: “What would you do in a zombie apocalypse?” was not answered by State of Decay developers Undead Labs. They are letting us figure that answer out for ourselves. However, last week Undead Labs did reveal a large amount of information about their character development and skills. As has been the case in past reveals, many fans of the anticipated game had additional questions. Sanya Weathers, Director of Community, along with other developers offered fans a forum to ask many questions about the game’s characters and their skills development. “It gives us a chance to find out what really matters to you, to clarify things we left unclear, and to see where we might need to focus in the future,” said Weathers.
One of the first questions asked was about the random character generation feature. “Storyline characters (you start as a character named Marcus Campbell, for example, and quickly meet Thomas Ritter, along with Maya, Ed, Alan, and others) will be the same every time you meet them,” she explained. “They have extensive histories as well. Many of the other survivors are generated, with their names, appearance, traits, and skills all potentially varying each time you play the game.”
In the Q & A, the team answered nearly 40 questions, clarifying many points that fans had questions about, including:
* How do you switch between characters? What are the limits on switching between characters?
* How many skills are in the game total right now?
* Can skills like construction or vehicle repair be taught?
* How hard is it to raise the skills of a character?
* Does increased firearm ability prevent (or reduce, or slow) wear and tear?
* Can negative traits be improved?
* How do you tell a survivor he/she is no longer welcome in the group? What happens if yes?
* How will conflict affect people?
The anticipation for the game has been high, and with the release looming, Undead Labs continues to help push the excitement even higher. After many disappointing zombie games, providing a deep, open-world zombie game could be exactly what fans of the genre are craving (besides braaaaiinnns, that is). In what our Chris Leggett described as a mix between “Grand Theft Auto and Left 4 Dead,” Undead Labs may have hit the nail on the head with State of Decay, but we’ll have to wait until a final version of the game is in our hands to know for certain.
