State of Decay

Announced all the way back in August of 2014, Undead Labs’ State of Decay: Year One Edition is an up-ressed version of the 2013 zombie-survival game along with its Breakdown and Lifeline DLC. Undead has redone all of the game’s textures and bumped up its resolution to 1080p for this remastered edition. And although parts of the environment still draw in as the player gets closer to them, that now occurs much farther into the distance than before.

While performing all of this work the studio discovered something that was as unexpected as it was crude. “Some of our contractors worked a ridiculous amount of genitalia into the background,” Undead Labs Senior Designer Geoffrey Card told XBLA Fans at PAX East this past weekend.

Since Seattle-based Undead was a small indie studio with a vision for an open-world game, it needed to turn to outside help in order to complete development of the original State of Decay. Apparently, unbeknownst to Undead until recently, some of those hired guns secretly and liberally drew penises into the game’s backgrounds. The phalluses were not visible in the original release due to its lower resolution and lower-quality textures, so they slipped through testing unnoticed and made their way into the final game.

When the enhanced resolution and texture quality brought the penises to Undead’s attention the studio began working them out of the game. The genitalia is not visible in any publicly available version of the game.

Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition has officially received its sixth skin pack with today’s skin pack release. The pack is only $1.99 features an absolute plethora of skins, among them are skins from Super Time Force, Faith from Mirrors Edge, Dragon Age, State of Decay, as well as plenty of others. The majority of the skins included in the pack can be seen below and if you are interested in picking up the skin pack it can be bought here. State of Decay: Lifeline was developed by Undead Labs and published by Microsoft Studios. It was released May 30, 2014 on Xbox 360 for $6.99. A copy was provided for review purposes.

Over the past two or three years, the popularity of zombies in video games has grown to the point where it is now almost impossible for many gamers to differentiate what makes any given option stand out amongst the ever-growing pack of average also-rans. Thankfully, last year’s State of Decay was certainly one of the better zombie titles and was especially impressive as (initially) a fairly modest XBLA exclusive. Undead Labs followed up its initial success with the Breakdown DLC, which, although still very good, left most fans of the series wanting more – in particular a new and expanded location. And that, in a protracted kind of way, is exactly what the Lifeline DLC is all about.

This time, the action takes place in the fictional city of Danforth and centers around a military squad known as Greyhound One, with players exploring a storyline dealing with the activities of the soldiers during the initial days of the outbreak. The structure is similar to the base game, but the fairly large home base is fixed, the missions generally feature a tighter timeline and players will need to contend with periodic zombie sieges that present a stiffer threat to NPCs (and overall success) than anything seen in previous outings. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the military setting adds a tremendous amount of firepower to the player’s arsenal, including more weapons and ammo; plus a raft of new traps, supply drops and assistance resources. Lifeline also features a number of new tweaks — like the ability to place rucksacks in trucks, effectively enabling more comprehensive supply runs — that occasionally have a material impact on the game.
