Fruit Ninja Kinect review (XBLA)

Fruit Ninja Kinect was developed by Halfbrick and was published by Xbox Live Arcade. It was released August 10, 2011 for 800 MSP. A code was provided by the developer for review.

If you have an Xbox 360, you may have a Kinect. If you have one you know the games library is still a bit small. Up until now all Kinect games were retail. Fruit Ninja Kinect is the port of the popular smart phone game Fruit Ninja, and it has the distinction of being the first Arcade Kinect game. Now you can truly be a ninja and take out your anger on a healthy army of fruit.

The game’s premise is simple: fruit flies up onto the screen and you move your hand in a slicing motion to cut it in half. Cutting three or more fruit in one swipe yields a combo multiplier. Some modes feature fruit that have special properties such as slowing time, others feature bombs which the player must avoid. It also supports simultaneous two player competition.

XBLAFancast – Fruit Ninja Kinect Special

In this special episode of the XBLAFancast we chat with Matt Knights of Halfbrick Studios about their upcoming game, Fruit Ninja Kinect. We discuss what exactly Fruit Ninja is, for those who haven’t played the portable version, and how it’s been changed to suit the Kinect interface. Matt explains the additions to the game including more blades and backgrounds in the dojo and a whole new feature for unlocking new shadows. Unlike the portable version, FNK has a multiplayer mode, so we talk about that as well, how it’s different from the solo and what players can expect from it.

To round out the episode we talk some lighter chat including some Halfbrick info. Matt talks about how it’s been working on their second XBLA title and how porting an existing game differs from the processes involved in creating their first XBLA game, Raskulls. FNK is a score-centric game, so we of course demand Halfbrick’s top scores in all their modes so that we might demolish their scores, however intimidating they may seem! Here they are:

Fruit Ninja Kinect Developer High Scores
Arcade: 1064
Zen: 278
Classic: 816
Team Arcade: 2012
Pomegranate: 86 Hits

XBLA’s Most Wanted: Grim Fandango

Long before Tim Schafer was the head of Trenched developer Double Fine he was a game designer at LucasArts. He started out as a tester in 1989 on Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: The Action Game and worked his way up, taking the reigns of Designer on Full Throttle in 1995. Three years later Schafer designed one last game for LucasArts, Grim Fandango before moving on to found Double Fine.

Grim Fandango marked the beginning of the end of the adventure game era at LucasArts. While the game received critical acclaim sales were lower than expected. It follows Manny, and travel agent at the Department of the Dead who helps those passing into the afterlife find their way to the Ninth Underworld, a place of rest. Sounds morbid, but this title was imaginative, funny, and most importantly it had solid gameplay.
