Star Raiders was developed by Incinerator Studios and published by Atari. It was released May 11, 2011 and retails for 800MSP. A copy of the game was provided by the publisher for review purposes.
Star Raiders is a space flight combat game that pits one ship against the entire alien horde. It is, in fact, a remake of the Atari 2600 game of the same name. The original game was very innovative for its time. Sadly the remake does not innovate as strongly as the original did. Star Raiders is comprised of one thing and one thing only: shooting down enemy ships. Occasionally you must blow up the occasional frigate or base, but for it’s simply shooting down enemy fighters. Fortunately your ship is armed well enough to take on this mundane task.

Any fan of the Tony Hawk series will tell you the series went downhill after American Wasteland. The series went psuedo open world with Project 8, and then the abysmal skateboard controller came along, nearly killing the franchise. What players remember and love are the more classic titles — the titles that didn’t have a tacked on story. The best Tony Hawk games were simple. It was about the skating and nothing else. That’s where Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater Arcade would come in.

While our site may focus on XBLA games, the staff at XBLA Fans likes to dabble in retail titles as well. If you said the words L.A. Noire (which releases next Tuesday), I can think of three or four writers who would instantly perk up and who wouldn’t be able to stop talking. I couldn’t stop talking after I viewed the Dead Island trailer for the first time, as it may be one of the best cinematic sequences I have ever seen.
Come this E3, I can’t wait to get the opportunity to check out Dead Island and get all the juicy details. You can expect to see quick previews on select retail titles as part of our E3 Best of Disc Feature. Big thanks to our friend Aubrey Norris for thinking of us. If you don’t already follow her on twitter you should. She is absolutely hilarious and does a fantastic job representing her products to fans.

This podcast is meant to come out on Tuesdays, we promise.
Anyway we had another delay this week due to illness and scheduling issues, but we have two special guests to make up for it. John Laster is joined by John Carson and Damon Fillman to talk about the latest XBLA news and catch up on the new releases they didn’t have the chance to cover last week.
Small correction, the guys referred to the XBLA Dead Space game as “Extraction”. The game in question is in fact called Dead Space Ignition, Extraction which is an on-rails shooter has yet to be released on XBLA.
