About Nathan Bowring

I'm a software developer who enjoys gaming, and I know how cliche that sounds. I've been playing XBLA games for some time now, and I'm a huge fan of the price and creativity of these games. Writing about them is almost as fun as playing them. Almost.

Goat Simulator coming this April

By  •  News

Do you want a hyper-realistic simulation of the life of a farm animal? Well, we don’t have that, but we have the next best thing. Goat Simulator is coming to Xbox 360 and Xbox One this April.

Goat Simulator released last year on PC and took the world by storm with its non-stop randomness. You play as an indestructible goat with an impossibly long tongue, out exploring an intentionally glitchy open world full of secrets. You must find as many ways as possible to rack up points, whether it be by doing flips, causing mayhem in the streets, or climbing ladders with your head. Check out the trailer after the jump, which contains the most dramatic goat footage you’ll ever see.

Wolfenstein: The Old Blood coming in May

By  •  News

Wolfenstein-The-Old-Blood

Today Bethesda announced Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, a standalone prequel to MachineGame’s Wolfenstein: The New Order. Taking place in an alternate-history 1496, the game will yet again follow BJ Blazkowicz in his bloody fight against the Nazis.

The game will tell two interconnected stories, told across eight chapters. Rudi Jäger and the Den of Wolves has Blazkowicz infiltrating the infamous Castle Wolfenstein in order to find the coordinates of General Deathshead’s compound. The search for the coordinates continues in The Dark Secrets of Helga Von Schabbs, in which our hero finds the city of Wolfburg where a Nazi archeologist is searching for ancient artifacts that hold dark powers.

Wolfenstein: The Old Blood will launch May 5 on Xbox One for $19.99. The first gameplay footage will be revealed at PAX East this weekend, and will be streamed on Twitch. Until then, you can check out the announcement trailer after the jump.

Pneuma: Breath of Life review (Xbox One)

Pneuma: Breath of Life review (Xbox One)

Pneuma: Breath of Life was developed and published by Deco Digital and Bevel Studios. It was released on Xbox One on February 27, 2015 for $19.99. A copy was provided for review purposes.

Pneuma Breath of Life review for Xbox One

If I learned anything from The Road to El Dorado, it’s that it’s tough to be a god. Sure, being worshipped and all-powerful is great and all, but you’ve got to live up to some high expectations. The prospect of being a god is the main conflict in Pneuma: Breath of Life, offering a unique perspective on being an all-powerful deity.

It’s important to emphasize that this isn’t your usual god game. You’re not an omnipresent spirit hovering over society, controlling life forms and building habitats, nor are you slaughtering your fellow divine beings. Pneuma is a first-person puzzler, putting you in the hypothetical shoes of Pneuma. As the creator of a brand new universe, you set out to explore your work and discover your powers. While the set-up may sound captivating, the game doesn’t quite reach god-like quality.

The Adventures of Pip preview: pixelation party

adventures of pip

You could make a case that the retro-style indie game is turning into an overused cliché, but  The Adventures of Pip goes beyond appearances and crafts a clever story out of its style. The game’s opening looks like a pixelated storybook, telling the tale of a tiny kingdom where the hierarchy is determined by pixel count. The kingdom’s royals are all 32-bit sprites, while the peasantry can only afford to be lower resolutions. One day a princess was born with the power to create pixels out of nothing, but on her 16th birthday she was kidnapped by the Skeleton Queen.

The demo, which was playable at PAX South, took me through the opening level of the game. Hero Pip begins as nothing more than a 1-bit red pixel, escaping his town as it’s attacked by the aforementioned evil queen. It looked like an extreme version of Thomas was Alone, as Pip jumped his way through a crumbling landscape as the world burned in the background. It’s a fun introduction, but nothing more than standard side-scrolling platformer gameplay. Boy, did that change quickly.

Terraria Other World Logo Small

Developer Re-Logic is teaming up with Engine Software to build an all-new Terraria game. While not the long-awaited Terraria 2Terraria: Otherworld is promising to bring a fresh take on the popular sandbox game. It will take the series in a new direction, introducing a new world and new gameplay elements.

Otherworld takes place in an alternate dimension, where a once-pristine world has been taken over by an unseen evil force who corrupted nature itself. You play as a member of a band of survivors fighting to restore the world to its former glory. Throughout the struggle you’ll harness the powers of weapons, magic, defenses and the environment itself. The game will play differently from the original Terraria, combining the open sandbox with role-playing and strategy elements. A short teaser of pre-alpha gameplay has been released, which you can check out after the jump.

As of now, the game is only in development for PC and Mac. An Xbox One version is being considered, but no final decision has been made. The original Terraria released on Xbox 360 in 2013, becoming one of the more popular games on XBLA. The game was brought to Xbox One last November.
