Fable Heroes was developed by Lionhead Studios and published by Microsoft Studios. It was released May 2, 2012 for 800 MSP. A copy was provided for review purposes.
Action-RPG series Fable first landed on the original Xbox back in 2004. It’s had two sequels released since then for the Xbox 360 with another two on the way including the Kinect exclusive, Fable: The Journey. Lionhead have already proved to be fans of the spin-off genre with Fable Pub Games released for XBLA in conjunction with Fable II and the Kingmaker mobile phone game for Fable III. However while those have proved to have been little more than amusing ways to earn money for the main retail game, Fable Heroes looks a little more promising.

Fable has never been the most serious or mature of RPG franchises. Players were as likely to save the kingdom and behave regally as they were to let one rip. After gong hands-on with the 4-player hack ‘n slash Fable Heroes at PAX East, though, it’s clear that Lionhead Studios has moved the series into more family-friendly territory than it has in the past. Up to four players take control of cutesy characters that look like marionettes and slash and spell cast their way through swaths of hobbes and other native baddies of Albion. You move in a linear path and mow down the monsters that flood the screen en route to a boss fight — a giant beetle that shoots projectiles and slams into the ground in the case of the PAX demo that several of us from XBLA Fans played in Boston this past weekend.
Oversized gold coins drop when enemies are overcome, which creates a near-constant scramble to get your hands on more than the other members of your party. The coins are used to buy upgrades in the time between stages, and they can also be transferred into Fable: The Journey. In addition, any of the 12 puppets that gamers can take control of in Heroes will pop up in their inventories in the forthcoming Kinect game.
Fable Heroes has passed Microsoft’s certification process and is ready for release on May 2. The game will cost 800MSP and will be among the first games to feature …

Lionhead Studios has revealed another character in the Fable Heroes roster. The newest hero to be dolled up is Maze, the old wizard you may remember from the first Fable game. His Will powers are not lost in doll form: his combat is spell-based, including such spells as Lightning and Force Push. Maze will join the seven other previously announced heroes, including Lucien Fairfax, when this four-player hack-and-slash releases May 2, 2012 for 800MSP. There are still more characters to be revealed, so keep an eye on XBLAFans for more announcements. Click the jump to see some new screenshots showing Maze’s spells in action.

Just rumored yesterday in a Gamasutra piece, it seems all but confirmed that we’re getting a new entry in the Fable series on XBLA. @lifelower just recently stumbled across a Marketplace link for the upcoming Fable Heroes, developed by Lionhead Studios. The gameplay looks reminiscent of cel-shaded games and the gameplay of a four-player co-op (online and off-line) hack-and-slash. There also looks to be mine cart levels, sprawling areas and board games to break up the action. It looks to be aimed at a more kid-friendly audience and will have unlocks for the upcoming Fable: The Journey for Kinect. Check out the screenshots and Marketplace description after the break in case this gets delisted. There’s rumors we’ll be hearing more about Fable Heroes sometime tomorrow as GDC begins and XBLA Fans will be there checking out the action.
