Crytek announced its free-to-play first-person shooter Warface is coming to the Xbox 360 in early 2014. Warface is a class-based, online FPS. Players take on the roles of Warface, a group of ex-army soldiers, battling against the greedy, power-hungry force known as Blackwood. Depending on their play style, they can choose between four different classes — Rifleman, Medic, Sniper or Engineer — and take part in co-op missions with daily challenges, team-based deathmatch, free-for-all and several other modes you might expect to see in an FPS.
This marks Crytek’s first attempt at a free-to-play game and will tie in to its social hub GFACE where players can share their exploits with others. You can sign up to learn more about the 360 version here, and opt in for the PC beta here. Check out the announcement trailer after the break.

Xbox LIVE Arcade is a sort of safe haven for gamers who just want to enjoy their games. It’s a place where microtransactional games are minimal, and rarely pay-and-pay-to-play. It’s a place where pre-order bonuses do not exist, and one that doesn’t artificially lengthen a game with pointless quests. Here we can play a game that’s free of the adult content that feels so forced in retail titles. Here we can play without having political and religious agendas pushed on us. Here we can simply be gamers.
I love digital titles. I love that I don’t have to clutter my cabinet with discs. I love that I can have access to them at any time, and that the stereotypical moocher friend can’t borrow my digital games. I love how pick-up-and-play they are. I never feel forced to devote an hour or more to one play session. If I only have 10 minutes, I’ve got time for XBLA. It’s freeing. Here’s a list of problems that plague retail titles that remain (relatively) free from Xbox LIVE Arcade games.

If a free game is great, a free Halloween update can only make it better. The new Pumpkin map captures the spirit of the season, as the land is littered with scarecrows, gravestones, and jack-o-lanterns, all illuminated by a giant full moon. The new map can be played in single player training, multiplayer, and co-op modes. Study the battlefield in the screenshots below, then go off and fight in the update available now.
