PAX East: DuckTales Remastered: The sound of nostalgia

DuckTales_Remastered_Splash

If PAX East 2013 is remembered for anything, it will undoubtedly be the contagion that swept the showroom floor. It wasn’t some handshake-induced strain that whipped through attendees and across the vast reaches of the internet. It was something far more potent: the long-dreamed resurrection of DuckTales and its infectious tune, spreading with airborne hums and whistles. By day’s end nowhere was safe, and among the eager mobs huddled around Capcom’s display booth hoping to catch a glimpse of their childhoods, it was ground zero.

When sounds of the infectious DuckTales Remastered theme song caught the ear of XBLAFans, we naturally investigated. We were intent on finding the culprit, daring to believe rumors of the nostalgic possibilities at the end of the line. What we found was Capcom Senior Product Marketing Manager Matt Dahlgren manning an arcade machine surrounded by toe-tapping onlookers and a flurry of questions.

“The whole game has been built from the ground up. They did start with the 8-bit version but everything’s been layered on top of it,” said Dahlgren, speaking of developer WayForward Technologies. “It has hand-drawn and animated sprites – the game looks like the cartoon.”

Could Capcom’s Strider series be making a return on XBLA?

By  •  News, Rumors

Strider_Hiryu_(character)

The crafty members of NeoGAF‘s forums have discovered yet another possible unannounced XBLA game, Strider. Box art (found after the jump) was found on xbox.com some time in January, but was promptly removed from the site. The discovery went largely unnoticed until Polygon reported just days ago that a Steam achievement was also found for the game.

According to Eurogamer, a reboot of the series was in development at Bionic Commando Rearmed developer GRIN before the company went belly up in 2009. Capcom is expected to announce new games at PAX East this weekend. Could Strider be getting the remake treatment? Is it a new installment? Is it a re-release as part of the Capcom Arcade Cabinet? Possibly. The original release was in 1989, and thus far we’ve only received the 1985 and 1986 game packs. Either way, more of Strider Hiryu could never be a bad thing.

Capcom Arcade Cabinet’s ‘Casual Mode’ was originally planned as a separate release

Capcom Arcade Cabinet XBLA

This past Tuesday saw the release of the first trio of games — 1943: The Battle of Midway, Avengers and Black Tiger — in the planned 15-game Capcom Arcade Cabinet for XBLA and PSN. Capcom will bring three more selections from its 1980s library of 8-bit games to Xbox Live Arcade every two weeks, and XBLA gamers will eventually be able to purchase all 15 of the Capcom Arcade Cabinet games in one 2000-MSP bundle.

Neither Xbox Live Arcade nor Capcom are strangers to revisiting old classics, so why release these particular games? Why now? Speaking with Japanese site GAME Watch, Producter Kenji Kataoka “a lot of requests from users about porting our old games,” according to a rough translation provided by XBLAFans prolific tipster @lifelower. “We couldn’t at that time,” Kataoka continued, “but…Capcom’s 30th anniversary year is good timing for it. So finally, [we said,] ‘Let’s make a game for users.’ We also wanted to release games that are completely converted using [the] current gen consoles’ power as we can.”

Kataoka’s initial remarks didn’t quite explain why these exact titles were chosen, but GAME Watch pushed him further. “We roughly chose games based on popularity inside and outside of Japan,” the producer explained, “and narrowed down these 17 games. Most of them are requested a lot from users but we can’t release some games due to various reasons. Personally I wanted Street Fighter or Tiger Road.”
