Skulls of the Shogun: Comedy is the Best Revenge

Skulls of the Shogun: Comedy is the Best Revenge

By  •  Previews

Video games have long made life after death a very diverse drag to say the least. From the loose, graphic interpretation of Dante’s Inferno to less disturbing (yet no less tragic) fates of those in Final Fantasy X doomed to monsterhood without a summoner’s sending. Haunted Temple Studios thankfully is making death a lot more enjoyable.

The tone is set very early in the demo build here at Fantastic Arcade. Fallen samurai general Akamoto finds himself missing one of his swords and waiting in a line outside a temple for entry into the afterlife like a Jersey Shore cast member awaiting for entry into an A-list Hollywood party. His prospects look about as promising as he discovers most of whom he’s in a crowd with will never get in and are being tricked into calmly waiting what will never happen to maintain order. This revelation predictably angers the deceased general whom sets off in recruiting other to fight their way into the underworld and also confront a mysterious imposter. The story it its core taps inspiration from revenge tales but mixes that serious storytelling into a more light-hearted universe.

How Microsoft derailed Nintendo

How Microsoft derailed Nintendo

It’s no secret that Nintendo isn’t in the best shape right now. After finding great success with the Nintendo DS, the Wii launched and got the masses talking about Nintendo once again. Then something happened. The Wii’s sales plummeted, the Nintendo 3DS launched poorly, and investors are questioning Nintendo’s direction with their next console, the Wii-U. Nintendo is desperately trying to gain back momentum. What happened to Nintendo’s mojo? Well, Microsoft, the Xbox 360 and Xbox Live Arcade all have something to do with it.

To truly understand what’s at play here, we have to first consider why Nintendo has historically been a successful company. Nintendo has always excelled at making games that appeal to the masses. Nintendo makes games that anyone can pick up and play. Mario has been a part of our living room since 1983 because Mario games have always been easily approachable for anyone who wants to sit down and play. Whether it’s you, your little sister, your best buddy or your dead beat uncle, Nintendo makes products for everyone. When Nintendo is succeeding, it has always been the case. So why are the tables turning?

Rewind Review: Bangai-O HD: Missile Fury

When the name Treasure is mentioned one thing usually comes to mind: hardcore arcade style shooters. Since its founding in 1992, Treasure has made its name primarily by developing bullet hell shooters like Radiant Silvergun, Ikaruga, and Sin & Punishment. Bangai-O originally made its debut for the Nintendo 64 and has since grown from a Japanese only release, to one of Treasure’s full fledged franchises. Fast forward a few years and say hello to Bangai-O HD: Missile Fury for Xbox Live Arcade, the latest entry in Bangai-O series.

Full House Poker fall season update: No news isn’t bad news

By  •  News

Microsoft has been rather silent on Full House Poker recently, which has prompted many of our readers to become worried the game might suffer a similar fate to its spiritual successor 1 vs. 100. The current summer season of Texas Heat started back in May, and while many of us have turned our calendars to fall, no plans have been made public regarding when Full House Poker will do the same.

Skullgirls sliding into early 2012

By  •  News

While we are all thinking we’d get a chance to beat up demonic girls this year, it seems we’ll have to wait until early next year for Skullgirls. On the official website, they confirmed the push but development is still going strong and Reverge Labs is planning on making the best game they can make. If you happened to make it to any big conventions this year, chances are the game was shown and Reverge Labs is taking all the community feedback to heart for implementation. The list of changes they’ve made can be found after the break but do check out our Q&A with the developer. Keep an eye out for more coverage on Skullgirls at XBLAfans.com.
