Microsoft: XBLA will continue to evolve and then die

By  •  News

Xbox Live Arcade will eventually cease to exist. Every Xbox 360 owner who has spent time enjoying the growing selection of titles on the service has surely had that thought dawn upon them at one point or another. Even assuming that the wait for a new batch of consoles is going to last a few more years, and that technical restrictions will prevent the most ambitious blockbuster releases from appearing on XBLA for some time yet, it’s impossible to not think about the service’s inevitable end. Now, however, Microsoft itself has acknowledged the mortality of XBLA.

When asked by Vox Games if the plug will one day be pulled on the service, Michael Wolf, global marketing manager for XBLA at Microsoft Studios, replied, “Personally, I’d say absolutely, yes. I think digital distribution has to be like that.”

The sound of pitchforks being taken to grindstones can now be heard echoing across the internet. There is no cause for the XBLA faithful to panic just yet, though. Microsoft’s popular downloadable platform most likely has a number of potentially excellent years ahead before its light is snuffed out. “I don’t think XBLA will be leaving soon,” Wolf clarified. “It is an incredible platform. We have XBLA fans, I don’t think it’s going to be announced anytime soon. One thing Microsoft has proven is that we continue to try and adapt and innovate in experiences.”

I Am Alive dev diary recommends thinking before shooting

By  •  Videos

You approach a stranger in I Am Alive‘s Haventon. He’s a dirty, grungy type of wanderer bearing a knife. You could unholster that pistol at your side and unload a few rounds into him. Oh yes, you could do that. Thing is, you might actually only have a few rounds on you. So then what’s your course of action once he’s lying in a pool of his own blood and his menacing buddies come ambling out from around the corner? Uh-oh.

Furthermore, what if the stranger wasn’t a bad guy at all? Judging the true intentions of wanderers in Darkworks’ action-adventure title won’t be easy, and players will have to carefully scope out situations before acting. Well, if they want to live long enough to get a crack at sizing up the next poor soul wandering the city’s wastes they will, anyways.

New Frogger game possibly leaping onto XBLA

New Frogger game possibly leaping onto XBLA

Xbox Live Arcade could have a new release in the classic Frogger series coming its way. A listing for Frogger: Hyper Arcade Edition surfaced on the Australian Classification Board today. The game received a G rating (no surprise there) from the board and is under development at Zombie Studios, and is to be published by Konami.

The listing only goes so far as to identify Frogger as “multiplatform,” but a separate blog post by game developer Daniel Lee seemingly lets the tadpole out of the bag, so to speak. It seems that Lee is hard at work on a iOS “port from console versions” of, you guessed it, a Frogger title. He reveals the project in question to be under development at Zombie Studios and on its way to Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii. Lee even went so far as to release a few screens, which can be seen below.
