How the dead are walking to The Escapists

The guys at Team 17 don’t know me, but I know them. Or at least, I know of them. You see, when I cast my mind back to almost 20 years ago, I remember picking up an unassuming looking PlayStation game called Worms. It was pretty unusual to have internet access back then, and when I cautiously traded in two or three of my used games for Team 17’s first multiplatform release, I had no idea just how amazing a game it would prove to be. The Escapists Alcatraz DLC out today

By  •  News

escapists_alcatraz

The prisoners of The Escapists have gotten out of some sticky situations, but this new DLC may be the toughest challenge yet. The new Alcatraz DLC adds a true-to-life recreation of the prison in which you can live, explore, and hopefully escape. Alcatraz is famous for being one of the strongest prisons in the world, known for its high security and numerous breakout attempts. The DLC is out today on Xbox One for $2.99, ready to see if you got what it takes to perform the jailbreak few have accomplished. If you want a brief look at the floor plans, check out the announcement trailer after the jump.

The Escapists review (Xbox One)

The Escapists review (Xbox One)

The Escapists was developed by Mouldy Toof Studios and will be published on Xbox One by Team 17 Digital. It is set for release on February 13, 2015 for $19.99. A copy was provided for review purposes.

TE1

The Escapists positions itself as a kind of craft-em-up roguelike set across a number of fiendishly designed secure facilities including prisons and POW camps. Think of it as somewhere between Terraria, Monaco and any number of top down action-RPGs. The main difference is that in order for you to be successful, The Escapists demands significantly more time and patience than almost any other game I’ve played — and what’s more, it’s perfectly suited to being a cute 8-bit indie title.

With only a very small number of simple core mechanics to rely upon, The Escapists turns the table on the typical sandbox approach taken by similar games. Instead, players are literally forced to adhere to a strict regimen of roll calls, mealtimes, break-times and work whilst simultaneously plotting their escape. It’s an inspired system that asks an awful lot from players and results in the rewards being all the sweeter.

XBLA Fans’ 25 most anticipated games of 2015

You’ve read our picks for the best XBLA and ID@Xbox games of 2014. Now it’s time to look forward with us at what might be the best games of 2015. While fully acknowledging that some of these games likely won’t up to their billing and others may get pushed into 2016, these are the 2015 games that XBLA Fans is currently most looking forward to. If these releases aren’t on your radar yet, they will be after you’re done reading.

#IDARB

Developers: Other Ocean Interactive and The People of the Internet

#IDARB is a particularly interesting game to say we’re anticipating in 2015, seeing as XBLA Fans got our hands on what we were told was the “final” game in December and published our review already. This zany handball-meets-platformer game from Other Ocean Interactive and the fine folks of the internet — many features crowd sourced — isn’t officially out until February, though, when it will be part of the Games with Gold promotion. It’s difficult to explain just what #IDARB is, but it’s easy to recommend that you go play it when it releases next month.

The Escapists coming to Xbox One in February

Ever wanted to live the life of a convict without committing a crime? Then The Escapists from Team17 and Mouldy Toof is your game. Both a strategy game and jail simulator, the game throws you into prison and tasks you with breaking out. The game features six unique prisons to escape using six various methods. Escape isn’t easy; as an inmate you’ll need to gather the necessary supplies and set up your escape route while sticking to the prison’s schedule and avoiding guards. You can do prison jobs to earn funds for supplies, or just steal what you need (you’re a criminal, after all). The game also features an elaborate crafting system, featuring almost 200 items to find and create.

The Escapists is coming to Xbox One through ID@Xbox on Friday, February 13th (good luck with those escape plans). Check out the teaser trailer after the jump.
