Upcoming XBLA fighter, Skullgirls finally got a release date this weekend, and this time it’s the correct one. Community Manager Peter Bartholow made the announcement on a NeoGAF forum:
Virtua Fighter 5 was first released in 2006. Since then it’s seen multiple iterations. The newest of those is Final Showdown, which could be defined as the ultimate version of the game. When Final Showdown released in the arcades in 2010 it featured new animations and character costumes. Also included were two new fighters, Taka-Arashi who hasn’t been playable since VF3, and Jean Kujo, a character introduced in Virtua Fighter 5 R. As far as XBLA fighting games go, this looks to be the definitive version of the game. Sega had this to say on the matter.
“Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown is the definitive version of the Virtua Fighter 5 series, incorporating all of the enhancements the arcade team has rolled out since 2007[.]”
“Final Showdown makes significant improvements to the fighting mechanics and adds new single player and online modes while maintaining the series’ classic balance and precision.”
Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown is slated for release sometime later this year. Until then whet your appetite on the above trailer (courtesy of GameSpot) and additional screenshots after the jump.

A new addition to the Skullgirls fighting team has been revealed by Shoryuken.com. Dark new character Painwheel is an “aerial dominance” character, and can fly using the blades in her back. She is said to be in constant pain and full of rage with the ability to charge up her normal attacks. Read her full bio below:
Once a normal schoolgirl named Carol, Painwheel was kidnapped by Valentine and delivered to the Anti-Skullgirls Labs’ secretive Lab Zero. There she was implanted with the synthetic Buer Drive and Gae Bolga parasites and infused with experimental Skullgirl blood, transforming her into the monster she is today. Violent and unstable as a result of these experiments, as a precaution she’s mentally controlled by Lab Zero’s powerful psychic director, Brain Drain. Fueled by rage, she draws her power from her pain and fury. Despite that, the soul of that scared young girl still lives on inside this monstrous body, desperately fighting off the onslaught of voices that would control her.
Skullgirls is set to launch on XBLA early 2012. Head over the page for more images of Painwheel.

The King of Fighter ’98 Ultimate Match (KOF98UM) was released by SNK/Playmore and retails for 800MSP.
KOF98UM is an updated port of the original Neo-Geo game. Released in 1998, it was the fifth game in the KOF series. But the series actually traces its roots further back to the venerable Fatal Fury series. Regardless, in its day KOF98 was a revelation for fighting games. It took everything that was good in the series and polished it to a new level. Simply put, there was no better team fighter around. Many would argue that it’s still the best team fighter if not one of the best fighters of all time. The debate will always rage amongst fighting fans as to the best, but all recognize KOF98 as a stellar achievement. KOF98UM adds a few fan favorite characters and rebalances a few others to make this the definitive version of KOF98.
