A new and less powerful Xbox One may be headed to retailers near you by the end of the year. There are whispers in the industry that a lightweight Xbox One, stripped of most its features, will make an appearance in 2016 for a fraction of the cost.

The lightweight Xbox One supposedly would only be able to play Windows store games and offer some sort of streaming service to compete with devices like Roku and Apple TV. The system would focus more on simple games and media rather than pushing polygons.

Writer Brad Sams at Petri has claimed to have spoken with his internal sources at Microsoft about the existence of plans for the lightweight Xbox One.

“I have heard from internal sources that the company is considering plans for a lightweight Xbox One,” Said Sams. “That may only be for Windows store games and would compete with the Apple TV, but it’s not clear if these plans have been scrapped.”

It will be interesting to see what facts pan out from the rumor and what Microsoft has planned for the next iteration of the Xbox One.
