After their successful Kickstarter campaign, Yooka-Laylee developer Playtonic decided to go dark in order to focus on building their newly funded game. Today they are ready to show the game to the world. They posted a massive article on their site, delivering loads of new details and images of the game.
The story of Yooka-Laylee will revolve around the hostile corporate takeover of the scientific Quack Corp by the evil Capital B. Yooka-Laylee will explore the villain’s headquarters, Hivory Towers, in order to thwart his company’s evil schemes. The heroic duo must free the ancient secrets of the Grand Tomes before the evil business succeeds in gathering all of the world’s literature.
As expected, the game will revolve around collectables of all kinds. Pagies are the big prize, as they are used to unlock and expand the mysterious worlds contained within the Grand Tomes. Tasty Butterfly Energy pulls double-duty, filling both the health and power meters. Finally there are Quills, used to purchase new abilities from the salesman Trowser.
Two new characters have also been revealed: Dr. Puzz and Dr. Quack. While they were once colleagues, things changed after their company’s takeover. Dr. Quack, who is an exosuit-wearing duck, sided with Capital B and builds new inventions to satisfy the new boss. Dr. Puzz stayed on the side of justice and will help Yooka and Laylee on their adventure, providing a whole host of transformations for the duo.
Finally, Playtonic also revealed details on the Toybox, a special demo experience for Kickstarter supporters. Once meant to be a small room, it has since expanded into a wide open sandbox that will let players test out the game’s platforming. The Toybox will be available to backers in July.
