The newest Marvel villain to have their own table in Pinball FX2 is Spider-man’s arch-enemy, Venom. With previous Marvel-themed tables, Zen Studios has gone one of two ways: they either incorporate the theme of a recent Marvel movie or they follow a theme from the comics. Released on December 12, 2014 for both the Xbox 360 and the Xbox One, Marvel’s Venom table for Pinball FX2 goes the latter route and incorporates a theme straight from the comic books.
Here’s what I liked:
Excellent theme — Although I do not read Spider-man comics, I am familiar with the characters in this table. There are numerous, complex ramps and ball lock locations which will take players time to master. Hit the correct ramp enough times and Spider-man and Venom will team-up to take on Carnage, Venom’s twisted offspring, whom originally was caged up right in the middle of the table.
Quick pace — Right from the start, this table has a very quick pace. The initial ball launch goes just a quarter of the way up the table immediately putting the ball in player’s hands. The “Super Shot” is just above the left kicker, which makes consistently hitting it a huge challenge. This also means that you must be ready for a quick bounce back to the main flippers. Even after the launch, the quick pace doesn’t end.
Lots of action — There are five main flippers which adds to the number of ramps, paths and actions that will need to be triggered to start and progress in missions. These added flippers make timing your shots even more crucial or you will miss that one specific ramp you need in order to finish a mission and ultimately take down Carnage and Venom.
Here’s what I didn’t like:
No demo table on Xbox One — Xbox 360 owners have the advantage of downloading and demoing the table before making a purchase. Pinball FX2 on the Xbox One sadly does not have this feature. We miss it.
Wrap-Up:
The theme of a particular table should be a major indication whether it is a “buy” or a “skip” for you personally. For myself, even though I don’t read the comics, this table’s theme did interest me, it held my attention, and made we want to continue playing to complete more missions and ultimately defeat Venom, and Carnage.
Score: Buy it
