XBLAFancast Episode 52 – Maple syrup, Moose

First off, apologies for the dip in audio quality this week. Some technically difficulties meant we had to use the backup for this episode.

No Andrew this week, but Todd is back and we brought Shawn back in to fill the gap. We talk a bit about last weeks release of Nexuiz, which we are somewhat baffled by in many ways. With not much else XBLA to talk about we chat some about SSX which most of us have been playing over the past week.

We recorded over the weekend, meaning we missed a lot of big news that came out on Monday. So if you’re wondering why the new segment is missing some pretty big stories there’s your reason. We round things out with some Todd Talk and don’t forget to play Small Arms for Andrews Remember The Days feature.

Please subscribe, rate and review the podcast on iTunes. We appreciate it! Check us out on twitter (@XBLAFans) where you can win codes for games, give us feedback or just ask a question. We are also now on Stitcher, so you can stream the show on your smartphone, give it a go!

Big thanks to Chris Green for the awesome theme music, be sure to check out his site BlurredEdge and why not follow him on twitter too @BlurredEdge.

XBLAFancast Episode 51 – Alan Wake’s Canadian Nightmare

With no Todd this week we’re joined by our other guide co-ordinator, Shawn Saris. He joins myself and Perry in a pretty long discussion of Alan Wake’s American Nightmare, so if you want to hear why you should be playing that, come listen.

Perry has some slightly more organised news bombs this week, with lots more announcements and such to talk about. After a week off Andrew brings back Crews’ Community Corner with a twitter topic and the Remember the Days game of the week for everyone to play.

Check out the music special we put out to celebrate the podcasts one year anniversary.

XBLA’s Most Wanted: The Strike series

XBLA’s Most Wanted: The Strike series

With the release of Renegade Ops earlier this year, the name Desert Strike was name dropped a lot. In reality the games aren’t all that similar, but the few times you get to fly a chopper around reminded many of the long forgotten series.

Most remember the first game in the series Desert Strike: Return to the Gulf, which put players in control of an Apache attack helicopter. However there were actually five games in the series, with a sixth planned but ultimately cancelled (though it morphed into Future Cop: LAPD). The 16-bit era Strike games, Desert, Jungle and Urban were all fairly similar with the only changes being settings and the ability to pilot other (ground based) vehicles in the latter games.

With the jump to the PlayStation the core gameplay of the series remained the same but Soviet and Nuclear Strike boasted live action FMV. Of course this was all the rage at the time, usually looking extremely low budget and coming off as incredibly cheesy. While the FMV in the Strike games was a little cheesy and the acting slightly hammy, it was very well produced and often extremely effective. A lot of the praise goes to the fact they used FMV for everything, meaning you could look up videos on every enemy, weapon or mission objective. Even now we often have to trawl through a huge body of text to find out objectives or even learn how to play the game. Read More

XBLAFancast Episode 50 – Anniversary Edition

Believe it or not, we’ve been doing this for a whole year (to the day!). We’ve gone through a lot of changes but we like to think we have a pretty good show on our hands at this point, we hope you do too.

Andrew’s out this week so it’s myself, Perry and Todd. We kick things off talking about Warp and a little about Alan Wake’s American Nightmare, Todd has a somewhat unique perspective having never played the original. Then Perry drops some news bombs as per usual. He also takes over Crews’ Community Corner, during which we have a couple of fairly long discussions about the future of the site and XBLA in general. Big thanks to @MRX93 and our own Steve Melton for their contributions to the twitter topics.

XBLAFancast Episode 49 – I give that news story a “Skip it”

XBLAFancast Episode 49 – I give that news story a “Skip it”

It’s a bumper episode this week, with one of our longest ever. We kick it off by talking about last week’s release of Shank 2, which we pretty much universally enjoyed. Be sure to check out our character unlock guide if you decide to pick it up. Speaking of guides, after spending a lot of time with Rise of the Martian bear for the guide, Todd isn’t keen to play it again any time soon.

After discussing some of the other random games we’ve been playing Perry brings the news. Which includes some Kickstarter discussion and debate about Gotham City Impostors approach to DLC. Then Andrew poses @MizzouGaming‘s twitter question to us, which leads to a long discussion about our thoughts on the past and future of XBLA. He then challenges us all to play Assault Heroes, so check it out and let us know what you think on twitter or the comments.

XBLAFancast Episode 48 – Kinectin’ with Nick

XBLAFancast Episode 48 – Kinectin’ with Nick

Last week was a big Kinect week on XBLA, so we decided to get Xbox Kinect Fans writer Nick DePetris to join us and share his thoughts. Sadly that means no Todd this week, but don’t let that put you off we still have a fun packed show for you.

Nick kicks things off by telling us about Double Fine’s Happy Action Theater and Rhythm Party, both of which are pretty interesting additions to the Kinect library. Myself and Andrew played a bit of Iron Brigade DLC pack, Rise of the Martian Bear, which we don’t mind telling you is pretty tough!

Perry drops many a news bomb on us, check below for links to the full stories we discussed.

In Crews’ Community Corner Andrew chooses a twitter question in which @wolvie75 asked what our dream Summer of Arcade line up would be, choosing from the previous promotions. You’ll have to listen to the show to find out our answers though. Also be sure to check out Carcassonne for Remember The Days and let us know what you think on twitter.

Please subscribe, comment, review the podcast on iTunes and tell your friends! We appreciate it! Check us out on twitter (@XBLAFans) where you can win codes for games, give us feedback or just ask a question. We are also now on Stitcher, so you can stream the show on your smartphone, give it a go!

Big thanks again to Chris Green for the awesome theme music, be sure to check out his site BlurredEdge and why not follow him on twitter too @BlurredEdge.

XBLAFancast Episode 47 – The UNO Diaries

Andrew returns this week for a bumper episode, lots of games and news to talk about and we even debut another new segment!

We kick things off talking about last week’s releases of Quarrel and Puddle, unlike some other weeks we’ve actually played enough of these to have an informed discussion!

Perry of course brings all the big news stories, for the full posts of those check below for links.

For this week’s Todd Talk, Todd has some feelings on The Behemoth’s recent statement that they’re going back to the drawing board with Battleblock Theatre.

Finally, we debut Community Corner, in which Andrew grabs some twitter questions from you guys and also sets a challenge. This week he wants everyone to check out Switchball and send their thoughts to us on twitter, so get to it!

Please subscribe, comment, review the podcast on iTunes and tell your friends! We appreciate it! Check us out on twitter (@XBLAFans) where you can win codes for games, give us feedback or just ask a question.
