E3 Hands-on: The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing off to a solid action-RPG start

The traditional action-RPG experience and what is sacred to it is, for the most part, set in stone. The isometric camera, stat increases on level up, new skills, tons of loot with each miniscule bonus making one item infinitely more worthwhile than another, all of that good stuff. Games like Diablo and Torchlight embody that experience, and The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing endeavors to join the diagonally-skewed club. You play as the great Van Helsing’s son, Van Helsing, in a world overflowing with the occult surrounded by the marriage of science and magic that could be considered fantasy steam punk.

As a bit of a disclaimer, developer Neocore Games is still rather early in the development process, so our hands-on is of pre-alpha gameplay. In fact, not only did we have to use a keyboard and mouse to play, they still haven’t decided on how to map the controls to the controller. This puts a shimmering asterisk on all of our experience with it seeing as the way a game controls is of grievous importance. That said, what we experienced hinted at something solid and enjoyable, albeit at the moment not particularly unique. Read More

These Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing screens are dark and full of terrors

NeocoreGames has released the first in-game screenshots of their upcoming action-RPG, The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing. Up until now we’ve just had a teaser trailer and some concept art to go on, but these screens finally give a glimpse of what the game will actually look like. Though the interface seen makes us think these may be from the PC version of the game, so that aspect could very well differ from the XBLA version. The game definitely looks like a fairly traditional isometric action-RPG, with a dark gothic styling.

The Incredible Adventures will follow the son of famed vampire hunter Van Helsing, who himself is also named Van Helsing, fancy that. It promises ” a tale wrought with wry humor and snappy dialogue” and “a larger-than-life hero possessing a dark yet romantic charm”. Of course that tells us nothing about the gameplay, luckily we checked it out at E3 and will be bringing you more details in our preview soon. Read More

The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing announced for XBLA

Hungarian based production company NeocoreGames, famed for tactical RPG King Arthur, have announced that they are currently developing a new action RPG for PC and XBLA, The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing. The game, which is said to be loosely based on Bram Stoker’s classic novel Dracula, will follow the son of the famed hunter, known in-game as Van Helsing, to the dismal land of Borgovia where former supernatural foes have enlisted his help to defeat a new scourge terrorizing the ravaged Eastern European city. Viktor Juhász, lead writer at NeocoreGames said of the project:

“Being located in Eastern Europe and having experience developing RPGs, Van Helsing is a natural fit for us; it’s a project where we can demonstrate our expertise in both domains and create something novel that RPG fans can appreciate”

The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing is slated for a late Q4 2012 release and we’ve got some concept art for you to enjoy after the jump.
