We’ve seen some games from the Independent Games Festival go on to become XBLA games with Rotastic being the last example from being a finalist this year. For 2012 though, they’ll have a chance at the first XBLA prize. A standalone jury of independent game creators will work together with Microsoft with a shortlist for the prize. The winner of the award will be announced on stage during the IGF awards during the Game Developers Conference on March 7 2012. They will win funding towards development various Windows platforms such as XBLA, W7 phones and Windows which sounds like a great way for your game to cross multiple platforms.

During the announcement, Ted Woolsey, Head of Microsoft first-party publishing revealed that “Microsoft Studios invests more than $20 million dollars per year to fund Xbox LIVE Arcade games” not including this prize. We’ll bring you the news on what lucky winner will have their own XBLA game later next year on XBLAFans.
