New game console launches might be just over the horizon, if GameStop is to be believed. Speaking at the GameStop Investor/Analyst Day in Texas this past Thursday, GameStop COO Tony Bartel stated that the launch of new Nintendo, PlayStation and/or Xbox consoles “seems imminent,” reports GameSpot.

Before you get too giddy about the prospect of new gaming hardware, know that GameStop hasn’t put these consoles into its earning projections just yet, but Bartel said to have referred to them as potential growth areas for the retailers.

“Although we have not modeled extensive growth for new innovation in this presentation,” he said, “we are very pleased to see the introduction of technology like virtual reality and rumored new console launches, some of which seem imminent.”

Even if Bartel is reading the tea leaves correctly here, precisely which console holders will be rolling out new hardware soon is still up in the air. It’s well-known that Nintendo is working on the NX console, which will succeed its Wii U hardware, but while many outside Nintendo expect a 2016 launch, the company itself has made no such announcement to date. Meanwhile, a Wall Street Journal report last month claimed that the so-called PlayStation 4.5 is headed to storefronts before October of this year.

GameStop New Consoles

But what of Microsoft? It was just last week when a pair of FCC filings seemed to indicate the pending announcement of not one but two new Xbox One models. One model sounds as though it could be the existing Xbox One with some aesthetic changes, while evidence pointed to the possibility of the other being the so-called Xbox One and a Half.

On the other hand, Xbox boss, Phil Spencer, who was himself originally responsible for starting up the Xbox One and a Half rumor machine, recently stated that he was “not a big fan of Xbox One and a half,” adding that he would “want to move forward in big numbers.”

When asked if Bartel’s “new console” statements were made in relation to the NX or some other console(s), GameStop executives declined to comment. Though it was not related to the new console talk, GameStop mentioned later in the event that, “As usual, we know more than we can share.” It’s unclear whether or not “as usual” could apply to the new hardware talk.
