Xbox One Unboxed
Youtube is littered with “unboxing” videos. More often than not, these videos are created by every day gamers who are looking to share knowledge with their fellow gamer. Every once in awhile, you will find something with some real high quality production value. Case in point, last Thursday, Microsoft decided to beat everyone to the punch and filmed their own unboxing video for the Xbox One.
Xbox Live’s Director of Programming, Major Nelson, is the host of this Microsoft production. In the video, he unveils the Xbox One Day One edition. Most of what is shown was already common knowledge for gamers, but there was one very pleasant surprise.
What is included that was not a surprise:
- Day One digital achievement (limited quantities available), power brick and Quick Start Guide
- HDMI Cable (Category 2 HDMI cable, rated for 1080P, 3D and 4K)
- DAY ONE 2013 branded controller which comes with a chrome D-pad. The controller boasts 40 new design improvements to improve gameplay and comfort. The controller can be played wirelessly with standard AA or rechargeable AA batteries. For wired gameplay, there is a USB port on the controller. Play & Charge kits have returned for the Xbox One, but they will only charge Xbox One battery packs, not generic rechargeable batteries.
- Kinect 2.0 (included in every bundle announced to date), which includes:
- 1080p HD camera
- Four microphone array
- IR blasting capability
- Improved gesture and voice tracking
- On board sensors to improve fidelity of depth-sensing
- Low-light visibility
- The Xbox One console, which includes:
- 500GB hard drive
- Slot load Blu-ray drive
- IR blaster port
- HDMI input and output connectors
- S/PDIF interface
- New Kinect sensor port
- Three USB 3.0 ports
- Wired and Wireless network support*
- Kensington Security Slot
*Wireless for the Xbox One supports dual band frequencies (2.4ghz and 5ghz)
The console, Kinect, power brick and the HDMI cable are finished in liquid black.
There have been rumors that Microsoft was considering packing in a headset with the Xbox One. Up until last Thursday, they were just that, rumors. However, Major Nelson, somewhat casually, mentioned a surprise. The Xbox One now comes with a pack in headset.
The headset now has three times the sampling rate compared to the Xbox 360 pack in. However, it does maintain some of the same features as its predecessor. It can be worn on either ear, it is super lightweight and comes with a bendable rotating mic boom. By the looks of the up close photos that Major Nelson later tweeted, the mute and volume buttons are located at the base of the wire, very close to the controller.
