Albert Penello, the senior director of product management at Microsoft, recently announced that the mandatory day one update for all Xbox Ones really is mandatory. In a recent interview with Engadget, Penello noted that without the day-one update, the Xbox One will be able to do precisely “Nothing.”

Penello also noted that, among other functionality, the day-one update includes a lot of the system’s apps. As of now Microsoft has not announced if the day-one update will be made available on its website in order for early Xbox One adopters to download it onto a USB drive. Thus, it appears that the only way to install the update at this time is to have the Xbox One connected to the internet when setting it up.

Engadget also noted in a later article that, due to an error by Target, an early adopter received the console two weeks early and was able to download the day-one update, which was 500 MB in size. Although the content and size of the day-one update is likely to change before launch on November 22, the size is unlikely to change significantly.
