Xbox One developers get access to free dedicated server hosting through the cloud
Microsoft has announced that any developer can take advantage of its dedicated servers and cloud computing resources by using the Xbox One cloud for free. The service, known officially as Xbox Live Compute, allows developers to take full advantage of the Xbox Live cloud server resources while not having to worry about setting up or maintaining a large-scale online service.
Along with the announcement, Microsoft detailed some of the ways in which developers could utilize the cloud to improve their games:
- Offloading computation to the Xbox Live cloud, allowing local computing resources to focus on core gameplay elements
- Dedicated servers for multiplayer gaming, which has many advantages over host-based multiplayer, which is the standard for most current-generation titles
- Adaptive gameplay, meaning that a game world can continue to evolve even when players are away from their consoles
- Background updating, already announced for Killer Instinct, games can be updated automatically without requiring player input
- Wide geographical availability, since Microsoft have datacenters all over the world, the Xbox Live cloud can adapt to meet the demand of the respective game communities throughout the globe
On top of Microsoft’s first-party developers looking to heavily invest in the Xbox One cloud, Microsoft is also pushing to have third-party developers make extensive use of the cloud, likely to push for exclusivity of games for the Xbox One or certain game content.
