The Double Helix drive behind Killer Instinct
When news that the dormant, beloved Killer Instinct brand would once again see the light of day during Microsoft’s E3 press conference, there was a moment of not-so-surprising satisfaction. The real surprise came in the form of the development studio Microsoft chose to tackle the series’ revival. The reins were handed to Double Helix, a studio that built its house with quick-turnaround licensed games, banging together titles based on summer blockbusters like G.I. Joe, Green Lantern and Battleship.
A little hesitation at the prospect would be understandable, but as Double Helix explains to GameTrailers in the above video feature, Killer Instinct‘s legacy is an inescapable fact they take very seriously, and worked very hard to get. “There are rare times when that passion that we have at the studio meets with an opportunity that allows us to go way beyond even what we thought we were capable of, let alone kind of what people thought we were capable of,” explains Head of Studio Patrick Gilmore. “So this is an opportunity for us to showcase what the studio can really do.”
Killer Instinct is slated to land exclusively on the Xbox One at launch, and will incorporate a unique pricing model that should keep the community stocked with fresh faces to pummel. We enjoyed what we saw, and played, during our preview of the game at E3.
