The man in charge of all things Xbox, Phil Spencer, isn’t afraid to acknowledge the competition when they do something he perceives as great. Recently he was at it again, tweeting that upcoming PlayStation 4 exclusive Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End “will be a great game.”
Spencer foresaw the coming storm his statement would whip up, noting that people would block him on Twitter for it. Sure enough, some Xbox gamers weren’t happy with him publicly approving of a game that’s exclusive to Microsoft’s biggest console rival. One Twitter user called Spencer’s words “embarrassing” and added that he might as well “wave the white flag already.” Another called for him to be fired.
The Xbox boss, however, stuck to his guns and even denounced the haters with that most feared of playground taunts. “We should all applaud when a team does something special,” he said. “Those who hope for [a] team to fail due to platform aren’t real gamers.”
Twitter users rushed to argue seemingly every conceivable implication of Spencer’s words, including whether or not a Microsoft employee should give props to a PlayStation exclusive and if it’s appropriate for the Xbox’s top executive to insult a portion of his customers, however misguided they may be. It wasn’t all vitriol, though, as plenty of users showed support for Spencer and agreed that great games should be applauded regardless of who makes them and what consoles they release on.
