Magrunner pits magnets versus Cthulhu on Xbox Live Arcade

Life’s full of heated, bitter rivalries. Microsoft v. Sony. Chevy v. Ford. Pepsi v. Coke. Yet with the big names gobbling up most of the confrontational spotlight, 3AM Games has dared to strike out and ask the unlikely questions. Questions like, “Cthulhu and… magnetism?” The answer, it seems, is yes.

Magrunner, the first title from the independent studio, is a first-person action-adventure puzzler set in the near-future, developed on Unreal Engine 3. By harnessing the power of the Magtech glove, Magrunner aims to test your reflexes and your wits based on the simple principles of magnetism as you square off against the Cthulhu Mythos inspired by the works of the author, H.P. Lovecraft.

Mars: War Logs reveals first images from the martian surface

The first official screenshots from the upcoming sci-fi action RPG Mars: War Logs paint a pretty bleak picture. Developed by Spiders, best known around Xbox Live Arcade for Faery: Legends of Avalon, Mars takes place a century after a global catastrophe devastated the colonists of the red planet, who are now governed by perpetually warring corporations struggling to control the precious supply of water.

Players take on the role of Roy Temperance, a multi-talented renegade (the best kind of renegade) who’s story is intertwined within the “cyberpunk” narrative. By unlocking and upgrading dozens of perks and skills, players will be able to develop Roy’s fisticuffs prowess as he engages in real-time battles against the corporate overlords and the creatures of Mars. Players are also able customize their experience through equipment crafting and a decision-driven plot that will purportedly impact the future of Roy, the many characters he encounters and the very future of Mars.

Happy Wars gets scary Halloween map

In case you didn’t hear, XBLA’s first free-to-play game Happy Wars launched last Friday, and is absolutely worth checking out. If a free game is great, a free Halloween update can only make it better. The new Pumpkin map captures the spirit of the season, as the land is littered with scarecrows, gravestones, and jack-o-lanterns, all illuminated by a giant full moon. The new map can be played in single player training, multiplayer, and co-op modes. Study the battlefield in the screenshots below, then go off and fight in the update available now.

Home Run Stars hits it out of the park October 26

Pumped for the World Series? When you’re not too busy watching the professionals play, Home Run Stars can make you an all-star hitter. Using the Kinect, have your avatar step up to the plate and play through League mode. Three unique stadiums await, each with their own variety of targets which will help you rack up big points. Compete with your friends online through the leaderboards or 2-player multiplayer. Besides being the next game to include Avatar Famestar, Home Run Stars will be the first XBLA game to have SmartGlass integration. The Duel mode lets two players play locally, one as the hitter and the other the pitcher, without the advantages of screen-peeking. Home Run Stars drops October 26.

Pool Nation release rescheduled, hitting the corner pocket on October 31

Cherry Pop Games’ Pool Nation was supposed to hit digital shelves last Wednesday, but due to unknown reasons it missed the initial release window. But the developer recently confirmed via Twitter that players can chalk up for their first shot on October 31, just two weeks from today. It will release for 800 MSP and features two player on-and-offline gameplay. Xbox.com hints that it may have downloadable content as well, but we haven’t heard anything of that sort. The listing also boasts that the game features “photo-realistic graphics” and “real-world physics.” We can’t speak for the physics, but we’re sold on the visuals. Hit the jump for more screenshots.

Special Forces Team X sneaks onto xbox.com

[springboard type=”youtube” id=”AAH3CTmKCWw” player=”xbla001″ width=”640″ height=”400″ ]

Announced mid-August, Special Forces Team X didn’t have any clear platforms listed out of the gate. This morning a listing snuck (sneaked?) onto Xbox.com, which with games like these usually indicates an Xbox Live Arcade release. If the gameplay looks mildly familiar, that’s because it’s Zombie Studios latest project. They’re the team behind Blacklight:Tango Down and its non-XBLA sequel Blacklight: Retribution. But Xbox Live Arcade has already seen its fair share of multiplayer shooters. Blacklight: Tango Down, Breach, Counter Strike: Global Offensive and most recently, Hybrid. What sets this apart?

Apart from its cel shading and third-person focus, Special Forces allows players to play dynamically generated levels. Each round players vote for one of a number of tile combinations for a given map. It’s like Halo‘s Forge maps, except as near as we can tell you don’t get the opportunity to customize the maps yourself. That may be a slight downer, but no other XBLA shooter has dynamic map generation, meaning that the replay value here is likely to be huge. Zombie Studios boasts over 100 different combinations between the game’s maps. Player characters can be customized, too. Weapons, appearance, player skills and taunts will all be at your leisure to modify.

Hit the jump for a general list of features and screenshots. Oh, and don’t worry about the CENSORED tags in the trailer. Zombie says they were just for fun. They won’t be in the game.

That’s right, next Friday Fire Pro Wrestling will be released. Finally you can pull that luchador mask out of your closet and go all Nacho Libre on your friends, siblings, roommates, or whatever. Over 300 wrestling moves can be used and/or unlocked, and you’ll be able to customize your avatar with over 300 included avatar items. A full campaign mode is included, and you can take your wrestler online for a free-for-all or tag team match over Xbox LIVE. Avatar Famestar support is included as well, meaning that the better you play, the more bragging rights and avatar gear you’ll earn.
