Alpha Squad was released January 12, 2011. It was developed by DragonDivide and retails for 240MSP. A copy of the game was provided by the developer for review purposes.
The Indie Games section of the Xbox dashboard is filled with twin stick shooters. It takes something special to make one of them stand out above the others. Alpha Squad by DragonDivide attempts to differentiate itself with impressive art, beautiful in-game lighting and other gameplay mechanics. But does it succeed in rising above the sea of competition?

Before mankind faced its epic struggle with the Strogg in the Quake games II, IV, and Enemy Territory, before there was the deathmatch arena of Quake III, players fought against a hellish enemy force in the original Quake. Unlike so many games of its time, Quake was true 3D. Its predecessor, the Doom series did not feature a true Z axis (up/down).
Even games such as Duke Nukem 3D and Star Wars: Dark Forces featured only a psuedo-3D ability. No, if someone wanted true 3D in 1996, they turned to Quake. And nothing would make gamers of yesteryear more happy than to see the game that spawned a new series for Id Software make a return on XBLA.

Being a site focused solely on XBLA and XBLIG titles we occasionally get to do some cool stuff that makes us feel like celebrities. Enter the April 29 Xbox Live Community Playdate. This isn’t a “let’s get together and play”, it’s an official, Xbox Sponsored playdate. We’ll be playing Hydro Thunder Hurricane, one of our many favorites around the XBLAFans offices.
We probably won’t be playing the DLC maps as it requires money to play them, but we will be requiring the multiplayer Tempest Pack patch, available here for free. This compatibility patch (technically free DLC) will let those who like DLC-only boats and skins use them, and people who don’t own the paid DLC can see them. For those interested the full version of the DLC includes three new achievements two new boats, three new tracks, expert versions of the novice and pro boats, and new skins for every boat. It’s well worth the 400MSP, as indicated by our review of it. For those wanting to buy the full version of the Tempest Pack, you can do so here.
