A glimpse at Minecraft’s creative mode and future updates
The biggest and most highly anticipated feature from Minecraft‘s 1.8.2 update is Creative Mode. Creative Mode will give players unlimited amounts of every object in the game, plus the ability to fly. Players can build to their heart’s content, with their imagination no longer limited to how much supplies they can find. A new preview, courtesy of 4J Studios, shows the mode running on Xbox 360 for the first time. The new creative interface is reminiscent of the crafting menu, a far cry from the PC’s giant scrolling list.
After the 1.8.2 update drops, 4J will be hard at work building more updates which will eventually make the Xbox port equal to PC’s version 1.2.3, but further updates may not follow in Mojang’s footsteps. “We’re going to be discussing with Mojang where we go after version 1.2.3,” says developer Paddy Burns, “Some ideas of taking the game in a different direction from PC having been raised already”. User-created mods are a big part of Minecraft‘s PC experience, and 4J wants to turn mods into new features for the Xbox 360 edition:
The Xbox 360 won’t be able to have the mod system that gives such a variety of community additions to the game on PC, but we’re looking at the elements of these that people seem to be enjoying the most, and deciding how we could tailor those elements into something for Xbox. The audience for the game on the Xbox is different from the PC version, mainly due to the console being in the living room and using controllers rather than a mouse and keyboard, so we need to ensure that whatever we do is right for that audience.
The first deviation from the PC version will appear in 1.8.2; suggestions from fans have lead to the inclusion of Superflat option for both the overworld and the Nether. Superflat is an ideal world type for creative mode, providing a completely level world close to bedrock so nothing can get in the way of your creations. The update does not have an official release date, but is expected to drop in the coming weeks.
