Yars’ Revenge reboot revealed, will they finally get their revenge?
Yars’ Revenge was a science fiction game for the Atari 2600. You may have played it, and if you have you wouldn’t forget it. The game had you playing as one of the numerous Yars, a futuristic mutated house-fly that just wants their home back. Because you see, the Qotic (evil aliens, we presume) have destroyed all three. So you spend the game fighting them and getting your home back. The new title, however, is a departure from that. Full details and a trailer after the jump.
This title, is a reboot in art-style, gameplay, and even title (notice the apostrophe changes from Yars’ to Yar’s!) Now instead of being a pixelated rainbow assortment we get to enjoy anime styled environments inspired by Miyazaki of Spirited Away, Lupin III, Howl’s Moving Castle (my favorite), and numerous others. The game also deviates from the original in the gameplay aspect, the original being a sidescroller in the Atari 2600-era (what else could they do, really? Not much.) and the reboot becomes a rail shooter, with landscapes, numerous memorable enemies, and third person action. Quite different from the original. The biggest change for me however, is that the Yar change from an insectoid race from the future, to the Yars, and you control a single female in the future… in a robotic armor suit.
The game is being developed Killspace Entertainment, a studio formed by castaways from big-name studios such as: EALA, Obsidian, Red5, and Pandemic. Not a bad pedigree at all. The title is slated to be released in early 2011 for both Xbox Live Arcade, and the PSN. Check out the trailer below, and I have included the original television trailer for the original Yars’ Revenge for a comparison. Let us know in the comments what you think, and if you wish they would do a commercial similar to that one but with the new game!
Sure don’t make ’em like they used to.
