New Double Fine game not coming to XBLA (for now)
Double Fine‘s next project, currently under the working title Double Fine Adventure, will not come to the Xbox Live Arcade, says company founder Tim Schafer – at least, not right away.
In a video update released Wednesday on YouTube and the Double Fine website, Schafer announced the initial platforms on which Adventure will release – Mac, PC, Linux and iOS, as well as certain Android devices. Schafer noted that these are the platforms “so far,” indicating other platforms, like the Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network, are entirely possible in the future. However, reader Kyle shared an image of an email from Kickstarter which said a console release is “unlikely.”
Adventure made headlines last week when, upon the game’s announcement by way of a Kickstarter fundraising campaign, fans donated $1 million within 24 hours, well past its goal of $400,000 (which was raised in nine hours). In the video, Schafer attributed the platform announcement to the high amount of donations. The project broke Kickstarter records for the most money raised in one day and the highest amount of financial backers, according to the company’s Twitter activity Thursday. Schafer has said the game will be a point-and-click adventure.
Double Fine is responsible for a number of cult hits, notably Brutal Legend and Psychonauts. Over the last couple years the company has focused primarily on downloadable titles with titles like Costume Quest, Stacking and Iron Brigade. Schafer himself is a bit of a household name among gamers, having had a hand in cult classic adventure titles such as Grim Fandango and The Secret of Monkey Island.
