If you were looking forward to eventually gaining TV DVR functionality for your Xbox One, then there’s some bad news for you: it’s not going to happen. Microsoft informed The Verge today that the feature, which it announced in August of last year, is no longer in the works for its flagship games console.
“After careful consideration, we’ve decided to put development of DVR for Over-the-Air TV on hold to focus our attention on launching new, higher fan-requested gaming experiences across Xbox One and Windows 10,” a Microsoft representative revealed. “We’re always listening to fan feedback and we look forward to bringing more requested experiences on Xbox One, Windows 10 and Xbox Live this year.”
The news is a little surprising because, despite its now long-stated desire to shift the Xbox One’s focus away from TV and towards gaming, there was a report in March claiming that the feature was not only still coming, but that it was being internally tested.
When Microsoft announced the feature in August, the console holder said it would allow users to schedule recordings and stream or download shows to their mobile devices and Windows 10 PCs beginning in 2016. The functionality would have been limited strictly to free over-the-air network TV.
